The Freiraum Festival is a collaborative festival taking place simultaneously in the physical and the digital worlds.
It is a way of defying the coronavirus pandemic and showing the strength and diversity of the Freiraum project and network.
Freiraum's thematic focus on the state of freedom in Europe today is seen through the perspective of the latest developments brought by the coronavirus crisis: we explore “the day after”.
The Freiraum Festival is developed jointly by the Freiraum partners and consists of a jointly designed Online Summit and several Local Events held by the partners. The curated online programme deals with freedom and Europe in the (post-)corona era: "the day after", and on the particular challenges the art world is facing. It is broadcasted live on 30-31 October and 1 November. Audiences are invited to watch in events hosted by the Freiraum partners across Europe or from their homes, and participate in the discussions through chat.
The Freiraum Festival has two, independent but complementary parts: the physical and the online.
The two feed off and into each other while retaining their independence as complete events unto themselves.
The online part of the festival is an experiment. It is not intended to serve as an online documentation of things that happened in the physical world or a substitute for them. It is specially designed and implemented for the online medium, as a forward-looking tool consistent with Freiraum’s commitment to participation, decentralisation and democratisation: a tool that shortens distances and expands possibilities, enabling us to spread geographically and to continue exchanging ideas and sharing experiences – even while travelling less, thereby reducing our carbon footprint and making Freiraum more sustainable.
The proposed format may correspond to the new (post-)pandemic reality, but is not a direct product of the situation. It is a strategic decision taken by Goethe-Institut and the Freiraum network to acknowledge the causes of the pandemic and to directly support the partners and their communities through local events all over Europe. These events involve civil society and the cultural scene, local experts and artists, and underscore the need for local action and support and the importance of integrating the local level into a European network and increasing the number of direct beneficiaries, in order to ultimately strengthen the Freiraum network, as the Freiraum Festival takes place locally – physically and simultaneously – in several cities.
Consequently, the Freiraum Festival has no centre, it is the sum of several local events. Freiraum Festival's physical presence is decentralised, making its online presence a democratised event with multiple centres, turning the “local” into a “subjective centre”.
Join us for the Freiraum Festival momentum!
